Many acne sufferers have tried to get rid of acne and the very mention of this word tends to haunt most sufferers. That is why people use terms such as zits, spots and goobers to describe the condition. Acne is a common skin condition which will affect most people at some point in their life. In the UK up to 60 percent of 12-year-olds and 95% of 18-year-olds suffer from some type of acne.
What Is Acne?
The dictionary describes this as "a disorder of the skin caused by inflammation of the skin glands and hair follicles." It can also be a non-inflammatory skin disorder. It's a term which can cover anything from blackheads, whiteheads and cysts to nodules.
This skin condition is broken down into different types and understanding this is essential to help sufferers get rid of acne. The type of spots and the severity of them define what type of acne you have.
Different Types
Let's examine now the different types:
Acne Vulgaris. Now in English the word 'vulgaris' will have connotations of something vulgar, horrible. But the word 'vulgaris' means common. So acne vulgaris is just 'common acne' This can range from mild to severe. This type of skin condition affects approximately 80% of people aged between 11 and 30. Sometimes even babies can suffer from it (although the cause for this is different from the acne that affects teenagers). This skin condition can continue in later life with about 5% of women and 1% of men up to the age of 40 continuing to suffer from some type of acne.
Here are the main causes for acne:
Poor quality skincare products and/or the wrong type Constant squeezing and picking spots Using certain medications - contraceptive pill, cold remedies and steroids
Acne Conglobata. A rare form of acne affecting mostly men. It is characterized by pustules and nodules connecting under the skin and can be accompanied by blackheads. If infection sets in then serious scarring can be the result. Acne Fulminans. This is similar to acne conglobata, again, affecting mostly men. Acne Rosacea. In conclusion we can see that there are various forms of acne, with the most common of them being acne vulgaris. The type of acne that a person has will be shown by the type of spot produced.
